About the EXIF Viewer
EXIF (Exchangeable Image File Format) metadata is information automatically embedded in photos by cameras and smartphones. This hidden data travels with the image file and can reveal far more than most people realize.
What EXIF metadata contains
- Camera — Make, model, lens, and firmware version
- Exposure settings — Shutter speed, aperture (f-number), ISO, focal length, and flash status
- GPS coordinates — Precise latitude, longitude, and altitude where the photo was taken
- Timestamps — Date and time the photo was captured, sometimes with timezone info
- Image dimensions — Width, height, resolution (DPI), and color space
- Software — Editing software that last processed the file
Privacy implications
When you share a photo online — whether via social media, email, or a public forum — the EXIF data often travels with it. GPS coordinates embedded in a photo can reveal your home address, workplace, or regular locations. Many platforms strip EXIF on upload, but not all do. Removing metadata before sharing is a simple step toward protecting your privacy.
Why this requires the Barnacles desktop app
Browsers restrict access to the local file system for security reasons. Reading full EXIF data — especially from large TIFF and HEIC files — requires native file system access that only a desktop application can provide. The Barnacles desktop app handles this natively on macOS, Windows, and Linux.
